Chiba University Graduate School — Service Design and Studio Work
Teaching Service Design and Service Design Studio Work at Chiba University’s graduate school since 2023, with 2026 marking the fourth year.
The courses belong to the master’s programme in the Design Course, Division of Creative Engineering, Graduate School of Science and Engineering. They connect service-design knowledge with practical skills for developing new services; the lecture and studio are taken together.
In the 2023 syllabus, each course carried two credits and comprised 15 classes in Terms 4 and 5. The lecture was scheduled for Wednesday period 4 and the studio for period 5. Japanese and English were used, and independent study included making assignments and acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to complete them.
Participation and ongoing work account for 50 percent of the assessment; submitted assignments and a final presentation account for the other 50 percent. Feedback includes comments, explanations and discussion, online or in person.
The programme invites practising designers from industry to participate in practical studio teaching. Sakamaki brings experience in product planning, product design, and business and service development to this graduate teaching role.
