MS-20M

MS-20M brings the MS-20 sound engine to a user-assembled desktop module, bundled with the SQ-1 sequencer. Tadahiko Sakamaki handled product management and product planning.

Introduced in 2015 as MS-20M Kit + SQ-1, this keyboard-free analogue synthesizer puts its controls and patch connections across a wide desktop panel. Two oscillators and high-pass and low-pass filters form the core of its sound engine.

Oscillator sync and FM expand its range of harmonically rich and metallic sounds. A switch selects the early or late MS-20 filter circuit. PWM input, a normal EG2 output and a trigger button add further ways to shape sound and audition a patch without connecting a keyboard.

Its CV/GATE inputs support Hz/V and V/Oct pitch control as well as S-Trig and V-Trig triggering. Three junction groups adapt plug sizes and distribute control signals. MIDI input and USB MIDI accept note messages from external keyboards or computer sequences; velocity is not supported.

The kit has wooden side panels and is assembled mainly with screws and fitted parts, without soldering or specialist electronics knowledge. The included SQ-1 offers step sequencing after assembly. Building the instrument, patching connections and shaping a repeating phrase become parts of the same hands-on process.
